Cons

  • Relatively pricey real estate
  • Parking in the area is difficult on First Fridays and weekends
History, arts, culture and community all are represented in the San Antonio neighborhood of Southtown. Like the name implies, its location is south of downtown San Antonio. Many Southtown apartments are lofts, as much of this neighborhood is comprised of older, Victorian-style homes. Even so, a variety of options varying in income ranges can be found in a Southtown apartment.

Southtown has had the reputation of being a somewhat eccentric part of town. The newer reputation leans toward an artsy, urban and hip-hop atmosphere. This is a very diverse area, both in culture and in racial makeup. Many residents of Southtown apartments are artists. This is not surprising, considering the fact that much of this neighborhood consists of art studios and galleries. First Friday is a big neighborhood event. This is an art walk of the Southtown and downtown area. Patrons walk around the area, visiting galleries and art studios while live music plays in the streets.

In addition to First Friday, there also is Second Saturday, in which the SoFlo (or South Flores Art District) arts culture is celebrated. The SoFlo Second Saturday is generally much less crowded that the First Friday and could be better suited to a relaxed and quiet crowd. Southtown apartments are convenient to both celebrations.

Not only are Southtown apartments convenient to downtown, but this neighborhood includes the National Historic Districts of Lavaca and King William. The Blue Trolley allows those in the Southtown neighborhood quick and easy access to downtown and The River Walk. San Antonio ISD serves the Southtown neighborhood. Some schools include Bonham Academy, Page Middle School, and Brackenridge High School. Bonham is an elementary school.
